“Don’t Suck,” an original independent web series on YouTube, will return for its second season on June 4, IndieWire can exclusively reveal. The team made the announcement of the new season on the International Day Against Homophobia, Transphobia, and Biphobia.
Originally premiering in 2017, “Don’t Suck” is an original web series that centers around a group of queer friends living in New York City, as they navigate their ambitions, insecurities, and romance. The show went viral upon its first release, with the 10 episodes racking up 8 million views over the course of its release.
The series was created by Tyler Isaac Martin, who also writes and stars in the show. Also starring are actors Katie Ailion, David Gow, Sushant Adlakha, and Christopher Trepinski, who will all return for the second season.
“I wanted to create something that could make you laugh, break your heart, and remind you that being loud, weird, vulnerable, and authentic is revolutionary in itself,” Martin said in a statement. “‘Don’t Suck’ has always been about joyful defiance — and this season takes that even further.”
Season 2 of “Don’t Suck” will feature a larger ensemble, including Emmy-winning “Somebody, Somewhere” star Jeff Hiller. Other additions and recurring cast members joining the show include NPR podcast host Ophira Eisenberg, “Good Morning America” Emmy winner Will Ganss, Jim Newman, Sheria Mattis, and Kennedy Kanagawa.
“Indie queer art is always important — but perhaps now more than ever,” Hiller said in a statement. “How exciting that the ‘Don’t Suck’ team came together and made this show with nothing but hard work and sweat.”
“Independent queer art can be a weapon of resistance,” Kanagawa added. “‘Don’t Suck’ is a finely honed blade.”
“Don’t Suck” will air free on YouTube through Pride Month, with new episodes debuting weekly Thursdays on the platform. The season will run for 10 episodes in total. The season will conclude with a “two-part musical,” on July 30 and August 6. In addition, the team behind the series will host a live finale event on July 27, which will be co-presented by Playbill.
